Your Feet Deserve Better, And Your Insurance Likely Covers It
Diabetes affects your feet more than most people realize. The right shoes can prevent pain, sores, and serious complications. If you are on Medicare or a qualifying plan, you may get properly fitted diabetic shoes at absolutely no cost.
The Science Behind Diabetes and Your Feet
Diabetes doesn’t damage feet directly. It changes the body in three ways that put feet at risk.
Nerves go quiet. High blood sugar weakens the small nerves in your feet. Pressure, heat, and pain no longer register the way they used to. Doctors call this peripheral neuropathy.
Circulation slows. Narrowed blood vessels mean less oxygen reaching the skin. Wounds that should close in days take weeks.
Immune response weakens. White blood cells don’t work as efficiently in high-glucose conditions. Minor cuts can linger and spread.
Where shoes fit in. Diabetic shoes can’t reverse the biology, but they remove the everyday triggers — pressure points, rubbing seams, tight toe boxes — so small problems never turn into serious health concerns.
What Actually Makes a Shoe Right for a Diabetic Foot
When people search for the best shoes for diabetics, very few are told what actually makes one. A properly designed diabetic shoe is built around five medical features:
- Extra depth — room for a custom orthotic without crowding the foot.
- Seamless interior — nothing rubs against vulnerable skin.
- Wider toe box — toes sit naturally, with room for daily swelling.
- Pressure-distributing sole — weight spreads evenly, lowering the chance of hot spots and ulcers.
- Breathable materials — soft leather and moisture-wicking linings keep skin drier and healthier.

Questions We Hear Most Often
Does my plan cover diabetic shoes?
If you’re on Medicare or a qualifying plan and have been diagnosed with diabetes, there’s a chance your shoes are covered at no cost to you. We verify your coverage before your appointment, so you’ll know what to expect.
Do I have to go anywhere?
No. Kori comes directly to you — your home, senior residence, or care facility. Whatever is most convenient, that’s where we’ll meet.
How long does the fitting take?
About 30 to 45 minutes. Kori takes her time to ensure the fit is exactly right for your feet and your specific condition.
Do my new diabetic shoes need a break-in period?
All quality footwear needs a short break-in period — diabetic shoes included. Start with 1–2 hours of wear per day for the first week, then slowly increase. This lets the materials soften and shape to your feet. Skipping this step is the most common reason people feel discomfort early on. A little patience now means a perfect fit later.
I'm getting shoes for my parent — can I be there?
Absolutely. Many of our patients are referred by their adult children or grandchildren, and family members are always welcome to be present during the fitting.
Do I have to deal with any paperwork?
Not a single form. Our team handles all documentation and insurance submissions completely on your behalf.
Can you visit our senior center or community group?
Yes. We offer group fittings for senior centers, care facilities, churches, and community organizations across New Orleans and the nearby states.
Why isn't my usual shoe size the same in Dr. Comfort?
Sizing varies from brand to brand — even between styles within the same brand. That’s why we send a certified shoe fitter to measure your feet properly. The goal isn’t to match your old size; it’s to find the size that fits your feet today. Proper fit means proper protection, especially for diabetic feet.
Ready to Get Started?
Your feet deserve proper care, and it should not cost you anything to get it.
